Health insurance for foreign teachers
Private hospitals in Thailand are used by most foreign residents, and they expect payment or an insurer's guarantee before or at discharge. Insurance is what makes that workable.
Start with what the school provides
Ask for the full policy document rather than a summary. The questions that matter:
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| What is the annual inpatient limit? | Major surgery or intensive care at a private hospital can reach the limits of smaller policies |
| Is outpatient care covered, and with what limit per visit? | Most of your claims will be outpatient visits |
| Are dental and maternity included? | Often excluded or limited |
| Can a partner and children be added, and at what cost? | Family cover is not always part of the package |
| Which hospitals bill the insurer directly? | Direct billing saves you paying upfront |
| Does it cover you outside Thailand? | Relevant for holidays and trips home |
When to buy your own policy
Consider your own policy if the school's cover is low or inpatient-only, if your partner and children are not covered, or if you expect to stay in Thailand after leaving the school. A personal policy stays with you when you change jobs, which a group policy does not.
Thai or international insurers
Thai insurers sell individual health policies in baht, usually priced by age band and with cover limited to Thailand or Asia. International insurers sell worldwide policies, usually more expensive and often with higher limits. Many teachers buy a Thai policy because it is easier to claim locally and the premium is lower.
Several insurers sell individual life and health policies to foreign residents in Thailand. Compare at least two insurers' policy wording before choosing.
Pre-existing conditions and waiting periods
Most individual policies exclude conditions you had before buying, at least for a period, and many have waiting periods (often 30 days for illness, and longer for some conditions) before cover starts. Declare your medical history honestly on the application. A claim can be refused later if something was left out.
Age and renewal
Premiums rise with age. Some policies can only be taken out below a certain age, and some can be renewed only up to a maximum age. If you plan to stay in Thailand long-term, check the renewal terms before you rely on a policy.
Paying at the hospital
If your insurer has direct billing with the hospital, show your insurance card on admission and the hospital contacts the insurer. If not, you pay and claim later, keeping every receipt and medical certificate. For outpatient visits, many teachers pay and claim.
