Your first two weeks in Thailand: a checklist for new teachers

The first fortnight is mostly admin. This is the order that tends to work, though your school's HR team may set a different one.

Before you fly

Days 1 to 3

Get a Thai SIM card. Airport counters sell tourist SIMs. For a long-term number registered to your passport, visit a mobile provider's shop. Many Thai apps, including banking apps, send codes by text message.

Find your way to school. Ride the route at the time you will commute. Bangkok's traffic at 7am is different from 11am.

Days 3 to 7

Medical certificate. The school will likely send you to a clinic or hospital for the medical certificate needed for your work permit.

Work permit and teaching permission. Bring your passport and documents to HR. The school files the applications.

Temporary housing. If you are in a hotel or serviced apartment, start viewing rentals now. See serviced apartments and renting in Bangkok.

Week 2

Bank account. Thai banks set their own rules for foreigners. Many ask for a work permit or a letter from your employer, so the school will often arrange this with a particular bank branch.

Health cover. Collect your insurance card and ask HR which hospitals bill the insurer directly. See health insurance.

Sign a lease. Ask the landlord for the TM30 receipt once it is filed.

Dates to note

Write down the date your 90-day entry permission ends. Your school will apply for the one-year extension before then. Write down the first 90-day report date too. See 90-day reporting.

Written by the Charlie House editorial team. Last checked October 2026. Thai rules change often. Check with the school, the immigration office or the agency concerned before you act on anything here.
